A practice chanter is a small, quiet woodwind instrument used to learn and practice playing the bagpipes. It allows players to master finger techniques and tunes without using the full bagpipe. Read more about practice chanter.

To play the practice chanter, blow gently into the mouthpiece and cover or uncover the holes with your fingers to make notes. Start with scales and easy tunes, playing slowly while keeping steady breath and finger control.

To tune a bagpipe practice chanter, start by adjusting the reed position carefully, moving it slightly in or out until the pitch sounds right. Then check each note and make small adjustments so all notes sound even.

First attach the reed securely into the chanter’s top and ensure it is seated properly. Then check that all holes are clear and the instrument is clean before playing.

Place the reed carefully into the top of the practice chanter, ensuring it fits snugly. Gently press it in without forcing it to avoid damage.

A practice chanter typically costs between $30 and $60, depending on the brand and quality. Prices may vary slightly based on the retailer.
